On the way

I always like fall best

because it’s cool

not 90-plus

and the sky is

clear, pale blue

and the leaves

on the dogwood turn

red and green at once

and the garden empties out

and the dry husks rattle

and the overlooked tomatoes

lie on the ground like

Christmas tree balls

and the geese fly

and the air smells like clean laundry

and the grass stops growing

and huge spiders drape

their webs across

the most unlikely places

and you walk up to them

and stop with a shock

when you’re nose to whatever

with a huge black and yellow

spider

early in the morning

on the way to school
